The Backlog: Black Clover - Quartet Knights

Me playing this game recently is kind of amusing for a number of reasons. I bought the game a couple years ago dirt cheap during a Steam sale during a time where I'd buy almost anything if it was cheap enough with next to no knowledge about the game. At the time I hadn't even watched the anime yet but I figured I could do so before diving into the game. I finally started the anime in November of last year and it has become one of my favorite animes of all time. With what I'm about to say about this game though makes me wish the anime had more game options to play...

This game oddly enough is another one of those games trying to jump into the hero shooter genre. Ironically though the game actually came out back in 2018 which puts it far ahead many of the failures we've seen come and fall on their face like Concord or Highguard. And in spite of Quartet Knights itself not being much of a success, it still has functioning servers years later unlike those other games that came out and ceased to exist. Just the issue being that unlike say Shinobi Strikers for Naruto, there is next to no community so gameplay really only exists against bots.

Before getting into the gameplay, while on the topic of the battles against bots... This game ironically has a story mode unlike Overwatch. The story is also a unique one that does not take place in the anime itself though it has a specific spot in the anime timeline where it occurs. The main focus of this story is a younger version of Yami and an original character for the game which is a lady named Karna. A bunch of crazy storyline that involves time traveling and a few details that fully explain how it doesn't effect the main plot of the series makes it perfectly fine as a stand alone story.

The gameplay however is probably a major reason this game didn't succeed. The idea of how to play the game on paper is pretty simple. All your attacks and abilities are mapped to the bumpers and triggers on the controller. However the UI and how many abilities can hit you with a knock down effect make combat incredibly chaotic. You can pretty consistently get knocked down even in the middle of using an ability of your own and the UI along with lack of obvious visual effects often make chaotic situations where you can't even tell what knocked you down or inflicted such damage.

The other problem is the effectiveness of multiple characters in the games seems severely unbalanced including situations where the AI will be better with a character than an actual human because of severe constant management of placed abilities you need in a non turn based game. IE one of the healers being Mimosa has to place her flower down near her allies in order to provide healing but the flowers can be attacked and destroyed. The game as it is now will almost entirely be you battling against bots which all instantly react to one of her flowers being placed and destroying it before it can heal anyone.

So overall multiple characters are overpowered in their class while others are going to feel completely useless in most situations. Fana is the best healer while also having better damage output more than the others and Noelle is a super useful support character with her ability to offer a forcefield and refill the character shields for allies close by. Then there are characters like Gauche who is a damage dealer who feels worthless unless you got extremely good twitch reflexes yourself.

If you're one of the new followers I got recently due to talking about waifus and are curious with mine for this series... Mereoleona is #1 followed by Vanessa and Sally!

My final verdict is... well the online community for the game basically doesn't exist. But if you want a game that's easy to get 100% achievements in, it's fully possible in a short time compared to most competitive PvP games as long as you don't mind that you'll have to team with bots against a full team of bots. The achievements include a bunch that are tied to playing through the single player content that ironically similar games never have and the online achievements are winning 1 single match with each individual character as well as winning 10 total online matches which is less than the number of characters that are in the game so it will be nowhere near the last achievement you would get.

Also it is ironic that this game in spite of being pretty sub par and unfortunately the only Black Clover game out there for us to play... is still playable in some way opposed to a bunch of much more higher budget live service games that have all died.
